MAURITIUS TRANSIT VISAS:

Required by all except those as noted above and those continuing their journey to a third country within 24 hours holding a confirmed onward ticket, documents for next destination and sufficient funds

MAURITIUS HEALTH:

Compulsory vaccinations: Yellow fever certificate if arriving from infected areas. Infants under 1 year are exempt. The countries & areas included in the endemic zones are considered infected.

Recommended immunisations: Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Polio, TB, Tetanus & Typhoid.

Risks: Malaria risk in some rural areas. There is no risk on Rodrigues Island. Rabies.

MAURITIUS WEATHER:

High temperatures and humidity all year round. Rain falls at all times of the year with the wettest period being between Jan-Mar. At that time of the year tropical cyclones are an occasional hazard with very high winds and torrential rain

Hints for Mauritius: Business is usually conducted in English although there are many other languages in use, including French. Visitors should be perceptive to unfamiliar local customs as there are many different religious groups, each with their own customs and conventions. The official drinking age in Mauritius is 18 years
Tipping in Mauritius: Discretionary in hotels & restaurants. Tips for taxis are not customary
Hotel Classification in Mauritius: There is no official hotel classification system in Mauritius. Arbitrary categories of £ up to £££££ are given here based on rack rates, facilities and perceived quality which equate to the commonly used 1- to 5-star system. These categories serve only to compare relative standards within any given area.
Import Allowances in Mauritius: For persons of 16 years of age or older:
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250gm. of tobacco
1 lit of spirits and 2 lit of wine, ale or beer
250cl of eau de toilette and 10cl of perfume for personal use
Prohibited/Restricted in Mauritius: The import of sugar-cane is strictly prohibited. Plants, Fruits, Flowers & Pets require clearance of the Ministry of Agriculture. Firearms & ammunition must be declared to customs on arrival
