VISAS: The following nationals DO NOT require a visa: Portugal, for stays of up to 90 days to holders of Portuguese passports for foreigners issued in Macao provided passport contains a valid re-entry permit for Macao, holders of British passports endorsed "British Citizen" or "British Dependent Territories Citizen" provided passport has been issued in Bermuda or "holder has the right of abode in the United Kingdom", Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Rep, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland Rep, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea (South), Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela, holders of a valid Residence Permit ("Autorizacao de Residencia") for alien residents in Portugal, issued by the Portuguese authorities, provided also holding a passport & holders of an official Residence Permit issued by one of the Schengen States.
TRANSIT VISAS: Required by all except those as noted under `Visas' & persons continuing their journey to a third country without leaving the airport (no night stop allowed) provided holding documents and tickets with confirmed onward reservations (except nationals of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Congo Dem Rep, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia & Sri Lanka, unless holding an official residence permit issued by Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain & Sweden).
A transit visa may be issued upon arrival at the discretion of the immigration authorities provided holding tickets and all documents required for next destination and an entry guarantee in that same country. It will enable one transit for a stay up to 5 days.
All visitors must hold onward/return tickets, documents required for next destination & funds of at least EUR 74.81 plus EUR 39.90 per day of stay, except: residents in Portugal, nationals of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland Rep, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden & United Kingdom & passengers holding proof of paid accommodation.
Members of the Schengen Visa Agreement should make enquiries prior to travel with the appropriate embassies of the countries within the agreement which they plan to visit.
HEALTH: Participants of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC scheme) which allows visitors on short-term stays to other member countries to use the public health care sector for free or reduced-cost medical treatment and emergency care.
Compulsory vaccinations: Yellow fever certificate for Azores and Madeira only if arriving from infected areas.  No certificate is required from passengers in transit at Funchal, Porto Santo and Santa Maria.  Infants under 1 year are exempt.
Recommended immunisations: Hepatitis A & TB.
WEATHER: The coast has mild winters. The north and central areas are much colder. Winter is the wet season throughout the country although autumn rainfall in the north can be heavy at times. Snow is frequent inland and in higher areas in the north. The south is the sunniest, driest and warmest area.
