BELGIUM visa service & travel information



The following nationals DO NOT require a visa for Belgium: Belgium, Austria, British passports with inscription British Citizen and/or European Union, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland Rep, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland
For stays of up to 90 days to nationals of: Albania, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, British passports endorsed British National (Overseas) or British Overseas Territories Citizen, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong (SAR China), Israel, Japan, Korea (South), Macao (SAR China), Macedoni, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, United States, Uruguay, Vatican City & Venezuela
Citizens of Taiwan can travel without a visa to the Schengen area for tourist and business purposes for up to 90 days within every 6 months. Please note that visa free travel is only possible with Taiwanese passports that include an ID card number.


Belgium transit visas are required by all except those as noted above and those continuing their journey to a third country by the same or first connecting aircraft, provided holding confirmed tickets & documentation without leaving the airport transit area (except nationals of Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Colombia, Congo Dem Rep, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan & Syria, Unless being EU Members or holding residence permits/visas issued by Andorra, Canada, Cyprus, Ireland, Japan, San Marino, United Kingdom or United States)
Transit without a visa is not available if any of the subsequent destinations or transit locations is a Schengen country requiring a visa. Therefore, as the passenger is entering the Schengen territory, which is a borderless territory, those nationals of countries requiring a visa for any Schengen state, which they are entering, require a visa at all times


Participants of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC scheme) allows visitors on short-term stays to other member countries to use the public health care sector for free or reduced-cost medical treatment and emergency care. There are no compulsory vaccinations in place, however it is r ecommended that travellers have up to date tetanus & polio immunisations.


The summer period (May-Sep) is usually warm with the  central areas being slightly warmer than coastal regions, although conditions can be changeable. Winters are generally colder in central areas but particularly so in the Ardennes region in the south which can have long spells of snow.

Hints for Belgium: Smoking is usually prohibited in public places (request permission before smoking in offices, cars and restaurants). On social occasions (ie invitation to restaurants), be punctual and dress as for business meetings unless otherwise indicated. Persons between the ages of 16-18 are allowed to purchase alcoholic drinks (less than 21% volume)
Tipping in Belgium: Service charges are usually included in bills, tips are not necessary. Tips for taxis are included in meter fare
Hotel Classification in Belgium: Hotels in Flanders (N Belgium) are classified according to the standards of the Benelux system which is overseen by the Flemish Tourist Office. Hotels in Wallonia (S Belgium) are classified according to a system legislated by the Executive of the French Speaking Community. Both systems range from 1-star up to 5-star. There is also a further "unstarred" grade for minimal accommodation.

Travellers entering from EU countries (goods obtained duty & tax paid - guidance levels):
800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars & 1 kg of tobacco,
10 lit of spirits, 20 lit of fortified wine, 90 lit of wine (of which, a max of 60 lit of sparkling wine) & 110 lit of beer
Prohibited/Restricted in Belgium: Unpreserved meat products. Other unpreserved foodstuffs must be declared
